Television legend and former Doctor Who companion Jean Marsh has recently been unwell following a minor stroke.

The actress – Sara Kingdom in the epic 1960s adventure The Daleks’ Master Plan – had been due to start filming the second series of the revived Upstairs Downstairs, a series which she conceived with Eileen Atkins back in the 1970s. Playing maid Rose Buck earned Jean Marsh several Emmy nominations throughout the original run of the popular series.

Sadly her appearances in the new series have been curtailed, with shooting due to begin next week for a Spring broadcast.

While you might think that her association with Doctor Who ended in 1965, you couldn’t be more wrong. In recent years she has repeatedly returned to the character of Space Security Agent Sara Kingdom (sister of Bret Vyon who was played in the adventure by Nicholas Courtney) in a number of guises with Big Finish, from trying to change time to prevent Mavic Chen’s actions in The Dalek’s Master Plan (only to cause them) in Guardian of the Solar System to finding a sentient house, becoming its soul and then being reincarnated long after the death of the original Sara Kingdom in her subsequent appearances in the Companion Chronicles series.

It’s all fascinating stuff; Big Finish have really made the best of this talented actress!

We’re sure you’ll join with us as we send all of our best wishes to Ms Marsh.
